ATT Uverse with Second Router

So lets say you have ATT Uverse service and you would rather use your own router rather than their modem/router combo box.

These are basic instructions on how to do this.

Why would you want to do this?

Maybe you want to take advantage of higher network speeds - gigabit ethernet or Wireless N

Maybe you want to use the router's firewall
(the built in firewall on the ATT box can be very difficult to work with)

I have not personally confirmed this, but many ATT users with a sufficient internet connection and strong network connection between devices in the home say Netflix starts and stops.
It has been suggested that changing the DNS server (cant change on the ATT box) routes to a different Netflix server which resolves this starting and stopping issue.
To change the DNS server, you need to do this on the 2nd router.

Using Residential Gateway as a modem

Connect Personal router WAN port to Ethernet port on RG
Connect a PC to RG LAN port
Go to
Disable RG wireless

Make sure the personal routers LAN DHCP address pool is set to a different subnet than the RG.
The RG uses 192.168.1.x, so you need to set the router to something else, for example, 192.168.2.x.

Edit Firewall settings for Router
Set to "Allow all applications (DMZplus mode)"
Power-cycle wifi router

Plug PC into wifi router
